  To receive our recommendation of which course is most relevant for you, take a few moments to tell us your level of experience now, and the skill level you’d like to achieve. Check as many as appropriate, and then we’ll give you our view of which Splash course you should enrol on.

  You should consider starting with the Basic Navigation and Safety course.

  It will give you a good understanding of the dangers you should be aware of when at sea. You will develop a clear awareness of how to behave safely and responsibly on the water. It is an excellent introduction to the world of sailing and power boating.

  You should consider studying to the Dayskipper level.

  As you have limited experience on the water, you will benefit from studying the Basic Navigation and Safety course to get a good understanding of the basics, and then progressing onto the Dayskipper course when you have a little more experience. If you are really ambitious, you will be able to go straight on to the Dayskipper course, though from experience, students benefit hugely from having a little experience first.

  You are very ambitious and intend to work towards becoming a RYA Yachtmaster© Coastal and Yachtmaster© Offshore Theory Course.

  As you have limited experience on the water, you will benefit enormously from studying the Basic Navigation and Safety course first, to get a good understanding of the basics, and then progressing onto the Dayskipper or Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore course when you have a little more experience. From experience, we know that students find the higher level courses much easier when they already have some hands-on experience of the weather and navigational aspects featured in the syllabus.

  We recommend that you study the Basic Navigation and Safety course.

  It will reinforce your knowledge and you will be able to relate it to the experience you already have. It would be the best way for you to develop some basic theory knowledge to use on the water.

  You should study towards a Dayskipper qualification.

  You already have a little experience which will help you with many of the topics we cover in the Dayskipper course. The theory you will learn on the Dayskipper curriculum leads to allowing you to be in control of a boat during the day and to have a good working knowledge of navigation and safety.

  You would ideally like to study towards a Yachtmaster qualification.

  You already have some experience on the water which you can apply. We recommend that you consider studying towards a Dayskipper qualification initially because it will give you a very good grasp of the fundamental theory which the Yachtmaster course takes to greater depths. With Splash once you have qualified as Dayskipper, you can “top-up” and qualify as a Yachtmaster at a significant discount. Many students prefer taking this approach in two steps rather than going straight to Yachtmaster. However, if you are really ambitious, there is no reason for you not to sign up for the Yachtmaster course straight away if you prefer.

  You are an experienced sailor and are looking for a basic-level RYA theory qualification.

  You could consider studying the Basic Navigation and Safety course, which will give you the basics of safety at sea. However, in view of your level of experience at sea, we would recommend you consider studying for a Dayskipper qualification. Students who have a lot of experience on the water tend to have little difficulty with the Dayskipper course.

  We recommend you consider studying to Dayskipper level.

  You already have plenty of experience to help you understand the theory that will be taught. Once you have qualified, you may then decide to “top-up” and qualify as a Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore, which is possible through Splash at a considerable discount.

  We would recommend experienced sailors with ambition to be in control of a boat to study to RYA Yachtmaster© Coastal and Yachtmaster© Offshore level.

  The topics covered in the syllabus will be familiar to an experienced sailor, and developing this level of expertise will allow you to consider working commercially. If you are unsure about moving straight to Yachtmaster level, at Splash we encourage students to get there in two steps – perhaps you could consider studying Dayskipper first, and then “topping-up” to Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore level afterwards? We offer a significant discount to make sure this approach doesn’t penalise those students who would prefer a more progressive approach to learning.
